Matt Bomer’s Hidden Sexuality Made Him An Actor

Matt Bomer has recently opened up about his struggles with his sexuality throughout his life & how hiding it taught him to be an actor.

Matt Bomer came out back in 2012 at the Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards while receiving an award for his fight against HIV. Receiving his award he thanked his husband & their children “I’d really especially like to thank my beautiful family: Simon, Kit, Walker, Henry”.

Since coming out he has expressed how difficult it was to tell his parents due to being raised in a conservative Christian home, he knew it would be a challenge. Bomer said “Telling your family is a huge, huge deal. I really view my life as divided between the time before I told my parents, and the time after. And the decisions I made, and the life I lived, before and after, are vastly different. It’s night and day.”

Bomer Coming Out To His Parents

Bomer realized he was gay whilst performing at the Utah Shakespeare Festival & decided to come out to his parents in a letter. He explained “I would have lost my sense of direction if I tried to do it in person”.

Unfortunately the letter didn’t go down well & his parents didn’t speak to him for at least six months. Upon returning home to his parents they “had the blowup that I’d always feared. We got that out of the way, and we got down to the business of figuring out how to love each other. I would say within a matter of years we started to figure it out. It was a struggle. It’s a struggle for anybody to take their paradigms and set of beliefs and understandings and completely flip the script.”

I Learned To Act By Having Secrets

Recently in an interview with OUT Magazine Bomer explained “One of the ways I learned how to act, really, is by having secrets, and having to function as a kid in a public school in suburban Bible Belt Texas”. He went on to explain how he worked on a gas pipeline with ex-cons where it was not a safe environment to be gay “It was literally acting of the highest stakes.”

Can you relate to Matt Bomer and having to hide your sexuality? I can completely understand how hiding such a huge thing caused him to improve as an actor. If you had to act for years in real life, hiding such a huge secret, acting on screen would probably come easy.
